Campo Santo

Location:
Northern end of town
Yungay, Peru

City Park

By Kristi Mohrbacher

Old Yungay is presided over by a tall white statue of Christ to the north, overlooking the devastating path of destruction left by the 1970 aluvión, a deadly mix of avalanche, waterfall and landslide caused by an earthquake. The aluvión is responsible for destroying Old Yungay and killing its 18,000 inhabitants. Today, this quiet area allows for silent reflection on such a disaster amongst gardens and gravestones.
