Inca Baths

Location:
Cajamarca , Peru

Activity Info., Spa/Hot Springs

By Erin Helland

Legend has it that when the Spanish Conquistadores arrived in Cajamarca, Inca Atahualpa was relaxing in his favorite place: The Inca Baths. You too can experience these baths, which are located about 6km east of the city. Although the old pools remain in tact and can be seen, only the new pools are allowed to be used by visitors.

Locals claim that the waters, which are full of minerals and can reach temperatures of 70 degrees Celsius, have medicinal and healing powers. They are said to have a positive effect on fatigue, rheumatism and respiratory and nervous system problems. It may not be proven that the waters offer miraculous cures, but guests are sure to feel relaxed and refreshed after a dip in the pools.

Bath in a cupboard

Rating: 75%

This place was really odd. It was really interesting seeing where Atahualpa bathed his festering war wounds. Then we looked at the steaming outdoor hot springs that we thought we'd be bathing in. But no! Then the guide led us to a building where we ran a bath in a cupboard. It was very strange, but quite a fun way to while away an hour. And it was extremely relaxing.
