Huancas

Location:
Chachapoyas, Peru

Cultural Tour

By Lorraine Caputo

Huancas, 5 kilometers north of Chachapoyas, derives its name from the Huancas nation. Originally from the Mantaro valley east of Lima, they were sent by Inca ruler Huayna Cápac as mitmaq, or colonists to the Chachapoya realm. Huancas has become renowned for its pottery, made exclusively by women, giving them an economic power uncommon in Andean societies. You can visit the workshops of Asociación Comunal de Artesanos La Cusana. Just ten minutes walking from the plaza is a mirador with a breathtaking view of the Sonche River canyon and a four-step waterfall tumbling through the cloud forest.
