Tingo is 36 Km. south of Chachapoyas on the main highway and serves as a starting point for the trek to Kuélap. A mule trail goes up the mountain to the legendary site. A separate road zigzags up the Petaca range, through the villages of Nuevo Tingo, Choctámal, Lónguita, María and Quisango, before reaching Kuélap.
In none of these hamlets is there a bank, internet, post office or pharmacy. Each has a health post with basic services; there is a doctor in María. Nuevo Tingo, Choctámal and María have telephone.
Only in Tingo, Choctámal, María, Quisango and Kuélap is lodging available. Power and water outages are common; Kuélap has no electricity. Locally produced woven and knitted goods may be purchased from the Asociación Comunal de Tejadoras, with workshops in Choctámal, Lónguita and María.
No tourism offices or agencies exist in this area. Local guides may be contracted in Choctámal for a trek into the Gran Vilaya, or in Kuélap for a tour of the ruins (Luís "Lucho" Tuesta Silva is very knowledgeable about local plants).
