Ruin
Pueblo de los Muertos (Village of the Dead) lies 30 kilometers north of Chachapoyas, near Lámud. The stout purunmachus sarcophagi have suffered extensively at the hands of looters. Be advised not all these structures are original. The chullpas mausoleums, also victims of plundering, long ago lost their roofs. The exposed adobe walls now melt in the elements. Some of the niche designs are said to be the exact same as Egyptian hieroglyphics. But whatever you may believe of possible cultural interchanges, these funerary monuments were crafted by the Chachapoya (Luya-Chilloa) between 1100 A.D. and 1350 A.D.
