Upon discovery of the chullpas (mausoleums) at Laguna de los Cóndores in 1996, a massive operation was launched to save the mummies from tomb robbers. With the assistance of Austrian archaeologists, Centro Mallqui was founded to house and study the remains. The museum has four exhibition halls with well-laid-out displays. Explanations are in Spanish; also, much is in English and some in German.

Sala 1 has information about Chachapoya culture, society and architecture, including on the different burial structures (mausoleums and sarcophagi) encountered in Amazonas region.

Sala 2 is on the Chachapoya-Inca period, with some of the largest quipus ever found.

Sala 3 is the Bioarchaeological room. Behind a glass wall, you can watch scientists studying and conserving the 219 mummy bundles contained therein.

Sala 4 discusses the ethnography of the Chachapoya peoples and their cultural expressions in the modern era.

The complex also has a botanical and orchid garden, and a gift shop. The admission price includes the services of a guide (Spanish only).

Located 4.5 kilometers from Leymebamba plaza; walk (uphill) or taxi (5 soles /$1.60 for up to 3 persons.
