Yerbabuena Sunday Market

Location:
Yerbabuena, Peru

Market

By Lorraine Caputo

In the dawn twilight, dozens of trucks from every hamlet between Leymebamba and Chachapoyas disgorge passengers bowed beneath heavy bundles. Tarps are strung over rickety stands, goods displayed. This is Yerbabuena’s Sunday trueque (bartering) market, the region’s largest. Soon all’s a-bustle. A Jalca Grande woman trades half a saddlebag of corn for plantains. Over there, a family is landing a deal on their calf. No, you don’t have to bring your pottery or chacra’s produce. Money is also used here. So step up and join the action. You might go home with fresh chicken for your dinner.

Travel Tips: A good outing is to combine this with a trip to Revash.
