Hostal Grau is located a few blocks from the mercado.  Climb the staircase to the reception, and you will be led to a sparse, gray-painted room--comfortable enough to lay your head during your stay to explore the city.  There is hot water in the evening. Rooms with common bath are cheaper than those with private. You can wash your clothes in laundry area up on the roof--and enjoy the commanding view of the valleys and mountains surrounding Ayacucho.  The Hostal Grau is a good value, and safe (though perhaps a little noisy).
