By Amanda Massello

Over 100 species of aquatic and land birds can be found in Lago Junín, Peru’s second largest lake, making it a very popular destination for birders. Twenty different rivers and twelve streams feed the lake and various kinds of wetlands, creating an ecosystem of amazing biodiversity.  The Reserva Nacional Junín surrounding the lake is no small fry; it covers a total of 53,000 hectares of land. Among the many species to be scouted are two of Junín’s own rare bird breeds—the black-nosed Junín Grebe and the Junín Coot—which are both in danger of extinction. Chilean flamingos and Andean gulls may also be spotted in the silvery waters of the Lake, whilst pampas cats, mountain guinea pigs, vicuna and wooly alpaca graze the shores. Fishermen are usually quite willing to take birdwatchers out on a cruise, so don´t be afraid to ask one. Entry to the reserve costs $5.

Getting There
The lake is located in the southern part of the reserve, near the city of Junín.
