Cochas Grande/Cochas Chico Overview

Mates burilados- or carved gourds- are the attraction in the small towns of Cochas Grande and Cochas Chico. If you've been travelling around Peru for a while, you've probably already seen these gourds, which are sold in hotel gift shops and other gringo places from Huancabamba to Arequipa. These intricately etched gourds generally tell a story about some aspect of Peruvian life: if you purchase one, be sure to ask about it. You can't miss the various shops in town.
Cochas Grande is not big enough to have places to stay or much to offer in the way of food: most people day trip from Huancayo, which is only a half hour away by bus.
