Museo Cáceres - Museum Ayacucho - Peru

This museum, housed in the 16th-century Casona Vivanco mansion, is dedicated to the life of Andrés Avelino Cáceres, commander of the War of the Pacific against Chile, and to the era in which he lived. Cáceres served as president of Peru from 1886-1890, and later from 1894-1895, and the museum shows vintage photos of him as a young military man up until his death. Other artifacts are housed in slightly dusty rooms around the courtyard, and visitors are led from room to room with explanations in Spanish about the displays, which include original manuscripts, old pistols and rifles, 18th-century furniture and colonial oil paintings (one depicting the last supper, Ayacucho-style, with Christ dining on cuy, the local guinea pig specialty) are all . In the center of the red-and-black stone courtyard is the second oldest fig tree in Ayacucho; it’s estimated that it was brought by the Spanish 322 years ago (the oldest is located in the Universidad San Cristóbal de Huamanga).
