The Museo de Arte Popular, located on the main Plaza de Armas, showcases some of the work of honored Ayacucho citizen and sculptor, Joaquin Lopez Antay (1897-1981). Antay was the main protagonist in a new movement of arte peruano, and was known for creating retablos (dioramas of campesino and religious scenes inside little colorful shuttered boxes), a few of which are on display here at this small exhibit.
