The Association of Gente del Manana - Activity Info. Huancayo - Peru

The Asociación Gente del Manana (People of Tomorrow Association) is perhaps the best organized local NGO, providing support for street children of Huancayo. Since 1983, the organization has strived to teach children to be honest, independent and hard workers by giving them opportunities to study and work in a safe and nurturing environment. Volunteers are always accepted, usually on a semi long-term basis, and will help to teach and interact with children between the ages of seven and 18.

The number of children at the nonprofit fluctuates between 120 and 200; a portion attends classes in the morning from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., with another group in the afternoon from 2-6 p.m. When not in class, the boys and girls are taught important skills, such as woodworking, or other useful trades, and are then paid by the organization for every product they make to encourage them to be contributing members of society.

While there is no fee to work with GeMa, all volunteers stay with Zonia at La Casa de la Abuela 2, where they are charged for meals and lodging. Zonia and GeMa director Carolina O’Campo both studied anthropology together, and have created this well-run system with the help of local and international workers and volunteers.
