The most remote jungle lodge (75 miles/121 kilometers from Iquitos), operated by the reputable Paseos Amazónicos, Tambo Amazónico is also the one where you're most likely to see some of the more spectacular Amazonian birds and mammals. It is located on the Yarapa River, not far from the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve.

The lodge is for the most adventurous types: there are only two dormitory-style rooms, each of which holds ten beds, each equipped with mosquito netting. The communal dining room offers a superb view of the river and there are plenty of hammocks for lounging. Lights are kerosene lanterns.

A favorite of birdwatchers--a one-week trip can result in sighting up to 300 species--the Tambo Amazónico is also good for those who like their jungle trips down and dirty. Guides often take guests to visit some of the nearby lakes and lagoons, hidden in the dense jungle. If the water isn't high enough, you may find yourself dragging the canoe along a muddy trail to get to where you want to go!

The Tambo Amazónico Lodge has one extra feature: interaction with locals. Guides from the lodge are often locals and can take you to visit nearby villages.
