Tour Operator

V!VA User‘s Description

A highly reputable company run by the husband and wife team Barry Walker and Rosario Velarde, Manu Expeditions operates a variety of excursions throughout the Manu Reserve. Birding enthusiasts will be happy to hear that Barry is a knowledgeable ornithologist who personally leads private birding tours to Manu and throughout Peru and Bolivia.

In conjunction with Peru Verde, a non-profit Peruvian conservation group, Manu Expeditions owns the Manu Wildlife Center, which facilitates rainforest research and conservation programs. The center boasts 35 kilometers of trails, oxbow lakes with giant otters and floating observation platforms, and two 35-meter-tall canopy platforms. A natural salt lick near the lodge provides visitors a great opportunity to spy the 250-kilogram tapir, a cousin of the hippopotamus. An active contributor to Manu preservation, Manu Expeditions continues to invest time, money and resources in environmental programs.

Recently, the company has teamed up with the Association for Andean Ecosystems to execute the Polylepsis Project, which aims to preserve this endangered Andean woodland species. They also run a tented camp at Cocha Salvador, located in the depths of the Manu Biosphere Reserve. Most trips involve a stay at the Cock of the Rock Lodge, from where guest head into the rainforest for a couple nights at Madre de Dios Lodge near Boca Manu and the company's safari camp near Cocha Salvador in Manu National Park.

In addition to jungle tours, Manu Expeditions offers a variety of other activities and side trips including butterfly watching, bird watching and horse trekking. Watch Macaws cling to clay at the Manu Wildlife Center, explore Machu Picchu, or ride the Inca Trail with the Pony Express. One of its trips even involves exploring off-the-beaten trail routes in search of lost cities! If you can't find what you want in a tour package, Manu Expeditions will also gladly make travel arrangements for you. Guides are experts in their fields and include experienced naturalists, biologists and ornithologists. Besides providing great service and an unforgettable Amazon experience, Manu Expeditions is dedicated to educating visitors about Peru, its people and history, and the unique wilderness that surrounds it.
