Manu Nature Tours are nature tourism pioneers that have been operating in Manu since 1985 and own the only lodge inside Manu National Park. Both the Manu Lodge and Manu Cloud Forest Lodge are equipped with excellent facilities and come with spectacular views of the surrounding area. Unfortunately, due to restrictions set forth by the Peruvian Park Service, the company has recently suspended its more adventurous tented camp service.
Owner Boris Gómez Luna has actively participated in the conservation movement in southern Peru, particularly in the Madre de Dios region where he has worked since 1984. He was part of the local conservation group involved in drawing up the original proposal for the creation of the Tambopata-Candamo Reserve in 1986. The company is firmly committed to promoting sustainable, responsible ecotourism in the Manu area and to providing local communities with economically viable working models for ecotourism projects.
Recently, Manu Nature Tours implemented the Llama Taxi project with the Jajahuana community, located in the high grasslands near Manu. A portion of the company's gross income is allocated to projects in and conservation of the Manu Reserve; its facilities are often used as bases for scientific research. With one of the largest and best-kept trail systems in Manu National Park, the company promises guests unparalleled views of rainforest habitats, birds and mammals. Guides are dedicated conservationists, and knowledgeable biologists with university degrees in both biology and tourism.
Manu Nature Tours also offers a wide variety of side-trip options, including mountain biking, river rafting, canopy climbing and trekking. The company has recently starting using speedboats to travel around the Reserve, which has the added benefit of cutting both travel time and fuel emissions in half. All packages are designed for people of any age, and combine visits to the protected Manu National Park and other natural and cultural attractions outside the Reserve. The five-day/four-night Manu Lodge and Manu Cloud Forest Lodge packages costs $1,403 per person, while the three-day/two-night Manu Cloud Forest Lodge short itinerary costs $466 per person. The trip should have been wonderful. Although, spending three and a half days traveling to experience dubious nature for two days is disproportionate. The guides were really poor and we all had to travel for eight hours in an open boat with little shelter in driving rain. There was no sign of otters or any other wildlife. The birds were scarce and hard to see. We liked the breakfast on the platform in the forest - the highlight of an otherwise unrewarding trip. At the end, the guide just vanished. I think she was ashamed.
