With over 180,000 inhabitants, Tarapoto is the largest city in Peru's San MartÃn Province, a zone full of fertile valleys and rough terrain spread out between the Andean mesa and a small area of lower jungle. Located just upstream from Yurimaguas, it is a convenient stopping point for the journey from Iquitos to Chachapoyas. Also, since it is connected to the Amazon jungle by a recently paved highway, Tarapoto has also become a popular jumping-off point for jungle tours in the area. The town itself has a pretty good tourism infrastructure, with a decent variety of accommodations and restaurants. Just outside the city's constraints, visitors will find gorgeous countryside full of worthwhile attractions, ranging from hikes to waterfalls to rafting adventures.
