By Air

Tarapoto’s small but modern airport is connected to both Lima (3 to 4 flights daily; 1.25-2 hr, $160-560 round-trip) and Iquitos (1 to 2 flights daily; around 1 hr, $75-500 round-trip). Book tickets as early as possible for a better price, either through LAN or Star Peru; Star Peru is the cheaper option. Star Peru also has a few weekly flights direct to Pucallpa (35 min, $100-125 one-way).

By Bus

Tarapoto is well connected to Lima by bus. The route passes through Trujillo and Chiclayo on the coast before cutting inland through Pedro Ruiz and Moyobamba. Most bus companies for Chiclayo and other national destinations depart from Avenida Salaverry. Direct buses between Lima and Tarapoto take around 28 hours. Civa (Tel: 1-418-1111, URL: has a daily bus to Tarapoto from Lima at 5:15 p.m., with the return trip leaving Tarapoto at 12:45 p.m. Semi-camas cost around $37.50, while camas costs around $49. Movil Tours (Tel: 1-716-8000, ext 120-121, URL: has higher-end bus services from Tarapoto to Chiclayo, Lima and Trujillo.

Yurimaguas is two hours from Tarapoto, while Tingo María lies 12 hours to the south. Both are reachable by shared taxi. Minivans (combis) and collective taxis (colectivos) for Baguas, Pedro Ruiz, Yurimaguas and other towns along the Corredor Transoceánico and for Chachapoyas leave from the 1100-1300 block of Avenida Alfonso Ugarte. Turismo Selva Jr Ugarte, 1100-block) has 8 vans daily for Yurimaguas ($4, 2.5 hr) and Moyobamba ($4, 2 hr); two combis for Chachapoyas (7 a.m., 11 a.m.; $13, 7 hr); and service to Juanjui, gateway to Parque Nacional Río Abiseo.

Collective taxis for Lamas leave when full from the 1100-block of Avenida Alfonso Ugarte (0.5 hr, $2).
