Safety

Tarapoto is not a dangerous town, but travelers should be cautious of their surroundings and avoid walking down unlit roads at night. Pickpockets are the biggest issue here, and they tend to target tourists and those who appear off-guard. Besides yellow fever, dengue fever and leishmaniasis are two additional threats in the area. Be sure to take precautions such as applying high-DEET insect repellent, using mosquito nets, and wearing longs and longs to offset the possibility of contracting them. Tap water is not potable in Tarapoto, so stick to bottled water during your stay.
