Although not the most popular destination in Peru, the Amazon Basin occupies most of Peru. The fact that tourism is less popular here means most of the activities in the area have a less touristy, more back-to-nature feel. Most things to do involve the area's amazing flora and fauna. During your trip to the Amazon you will surely see plants and animals unlike any you have ever seen before.

At Lake Quistococha, near Iquitos, there are large nature reserves including one of the largest protected areas in Peru, the Reserva Nacional Pacaya-Samiria, which is not easy to get to, but those who are determined enough to visit it are sure to have an unforgettable experience.

In the Peruvian Amazon you will also find the Manu Biosphere Reserve, which is considered to be one of the most important nature reserves in the world. It is home to thousands of species of plants and animals. It is most famous for its bird watching: there are said to be over 1,000 species of birds in the area.

Other activities in the area involve shopping for crafts in the floating market of Iquitos on the banks of a mile-wide river.
