By John Howison

Manu Biosphere Reserve--One of the world's largest areas of protected rainforest, the Manu Biosphere Reserve is one of the last pieces of truly virgin rainforest left in the world. As such, visitors explore deep into the untouched jungle in hoping to see jaguars and other exotic animals.

• Tambopata Candamo Reserve--If you're short on time or money, the Tambopata Candarno Reserve is an excellent alternative to Manu. Tambopata boasts a protected area of nearly 1.5 million hectares (about 1/3 the size of Costa Rica). In addition to endangered jaguars, giant otters and giant armadillos, the Reserve contains more species of birds and butterflies than any other area of similar size on the planet.

Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve--The Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve is the largest protected area in Peru. Given its inaccessibility those willing to make the journey into Pacaya-Samiria will not be disappointed. Taking advantage of the community-immersion opportunities offered by some of the community-based tourism agencies will make for an unforgettable experience.
