There are many inexpensive hostels in Puerto Maldonado. Hospedaje Tres Fronteras is one recommended for its newness--it was constructed in 2004--and the high quality of the rooms for $15 a night. A larger, matrimonial room is only $18. Prices remain constant throughout the year. Laundry service, breakfast and cable television all come with the package, and there is an electric fan in every unit. All of the rooms are internal, in a somewhat prison-like manner, which shelters you from the ongoing roar of motorcycles outside. But to allow air to circulate, the windows facing the halls have screens instead of glass, and you can hear your fellow travelers clearly, as they can hear you, not to mention the loud hostel door buzzer at any hour of the night.
