Puerto Maldonado, Puerto Maldonado, Peru

Hotel

By Ricardo Segreda

Hotel Cabaña Quinta is probably the most popular and recognized accommodation in all of Puerto Maldonado. Its selling points: air conditioning, stocked fridges in every room, free Internet access (including wireless), a bar, restaurant and cafeteria, a sauna, a mini-gymnasium, a Jacuzzi, two swimming pools (one for little kids) a breakfast buffet, a conference room, its own travel agency, not to mention the usual, such as calling and faxing services, laundry, safety box, and they take credit cards, though not MasterCard, which is not accepted anywhere in Puerto Maldonado. The price for a room, minus air conditioning (though with a fan), starts at $15, with AC at $30.

This Hotel is: Expensive

Mold on bread and awful service by owner´s son!

Rating: 0%

When I was having breakfast this morning I found mold on the bread, so I went to reception to see if I could speak with management. They asked me to go back to my seat, and told me that the person in charge would come and see me (this is after I told them what it was about.) I was waiting and nothing happened, so I went back to reception and asked them, "So? What happened?" The owner’s son said, using a loud voice, “We are all busy here.” Then one of the ladies who works there asked what had happened and I told her. I had to show her the actual bread so that she could believe it. All she said was, “Make sure when you receive the bread next time, you tell them about it.” I don’t think this type of service is accepted anywhere. I don't recommend this hotel, not even for 10 soles—it’s not worth it. On top of that, the showers are dirty; there’s one towel for three people; the air conditioner right next to one bed doesn’t let you sleep as it makes such a loud noise. For me this is the worse experience ever, especially the owner’s son not caring about my complaint.

Quaint, but you must lower your standards.

Rating: 75%

I was with a group from America. I once lived in Central America and have traveled from Mexico to South America before, so I knew what to expect. I stayed at this hotel for about five days. I found it very quaint, much like a Bogart movie. Service and food were great, but I never complained about mold on my bread like the woman from Australia. Just cut the mold off. Also, I never saw any Jacuzzi, in-room fridge, laundry, swimming pools or conference room like the above overview reported. I did not have a room with A/C, and it was fine. At night you should not walk the dark streets alone to the center of town and don't open your room door at night to anyone you don't know. I know a man who was stabbed and robbed. Could happen anywhere. But there are little places downtown that serve really great cold beer and there's a great pizzeria, too. It is not a luxury hotel, so don't think you're in Sydney, Paris, NY or the like. This town is a gold mining town. Stay away during gold mining (wet) season. High crime! But for anybody like me who wants to experience the flavor of countries that I visit instead of taking the flavor of the Hyatt with them, this place is a great place to stay. I have fond memories of it and would stay there again.
