The southern part of the Peruvian Amazon jungle borders Brazil and Bolivia, and is home to two of Peru’s most important nature reserves: Manu Biosphere Reserve and Tambopata-Candamo Nature Reserve. The main access point to these reserves is the small, laid-back jungle town of Puerto Maldonado, which is the capital of the Madre Dios province, named after the RÃo Madre Dios. This tributary of the Amazon River, as well as the important RÃo Tambopata, are the two major rivers flowing through this part of the jungle. Although tours in the Southern Peruvian jungle are pricey, this tends to be the destination of choice for adventure travelers keen on experiencing a more remote and better conserved part of the Peruvian Amazon.
