Mirador De Cerro Cristo Blanco And Cerro Chen Chen Geoglyphs - Monument Moquegua - Peru

Atop a hill on the city’s south side looms a huge, white statute of Christ overlooking the landscape. The grounds of Cerro Cristo Blanco not only offer mere humans the same panoramic view, but also have nice, terraced gardens. A suspension bridge connects this hill with the one on the other side of Calle Tacna.

Further south on Calle Tacna is Cerro Chen Chen. On the sides of the hills are geoglyphs of llamas, humans and other designs that date to the Tiwanaku era (500-950 AD). They were located on one of the major ancient trade routes between the altiplano and the coast. Archaeologists believe these drawings had religious or astronomic significance.

Location:

Moquegua, Peru

To get to Cerro Chen Chen (1.5 km / 1 mi from Tacna, 20 min), follow Calle Tacna past the Cerro Cristo Blanco and a housing development, to Carretera Toquepala; turn right. Within a few hundred meters is a sign indicating the geoglyphs, which are easily seen from the road. To the left of the main panel are other drawings.

The best time to see the geoglyphs is early in the morning or in late afternoon.
