Safety on the Pacific Coast south of Lima

As in other places, foreign travelers tend to be the target of petty crimes such as pick-pocketing. Be aware of your surroundings, and don't carry unnecessary credit cards or cash. At night, take taxis rather than walking, even if the distance is short. Beaches also should be avoided at night, since there tends to be a high danger of robberies after dark.

The sand dunes pose their own hazards. They are more difficult to walk on than appears, and it is easy to get lost in this desert. Stay close to civilization, don’t be out on them after dark and preferably go with a guide.

The devastating 2007 earthquake reminds us this is an earthquake zone.
