Traveler Advice

By Lorraine Caputo

Immediately after the 2007 earthquake security had actually improved in Pisco, thanks to the presence of military troops. Once they pulled out, the crime rate soared. With the one-year anniversary of the quake, national police reinforcements were sent in. The city has become a bit safer, though locals continue to take care on the streets away from the Plaza de Armas where, they say, thieves hide out in abandoned lots. Some advise that for time it is best to stay in Paracas. It is advisable to take a taxi after dark in Pisco.
