Teatro Orfeón, constructed in 1848, is Tacna’s oldest theater. Unlike most playhouses we know today with rows of seating facing the stage in front, the Orfeón was designed along traditional Spanish and Mediterranean lines. The original performance space was the patio around which was a portico from under which the audience watched. Later, the theater was moved inside. The large room with an elevated stage at one end is where the performance occurs. On both long sides is a raised platform where attendees sit. Since 1998 this has been the center for Deciertopicante and Artilandia, groups working in educational and therapeutic dance, theater and other arts. Café Thespis upstairs hosts tertulias, or literary readings every Thursday night and is a wonderful place to just have a local wine, coffee or mate and chat.

Travel Tips: Functions usually are at 7:30 p.m. weekend evenings. The café is open Tuesday-Saturday 5-11 p.m. and after events.
