Due to its proximity to the Chilean border, Tacna restaurants serve up an interesting mixture of dishes from both the Peruvian Andes and Chile. Typical local treats include choclo con queso (corn with cheese), cuy frito (fried guinea pig) and pastel de choclo (a kind of corn cake often filled with pork and raisins). Another popular regional specialty is patasca, a stew made of tripe, corn and potatoes. Empanadas are sold all over and make for a good snack or light meal for budget travelers. They come in a variety of fillings, from cheese to ajà de gallina. Accompany your meal with the local pisco.
A slew of cheap eateries are on General Varela, north of Avenida Augusto B. LeguÃa. Tacna’s two markets are other places to eat inexpensively, as well as to pick up supplies: Mercado 2 de Mayo (Av. 2 de Mayo, between Pasaje Calderón de la Barca and Meléndez) and the Mercado Central (Av. Bolognesi and Pallardelli). Many restaurants close early on Sundays or don’t open at all.
