V!VA User‘s Description
Located on the eastern bank of the mouth of the Demerara River, Georgetown is the capital of Guyana and the country’s commercial hub. The city is neatly organized along a grid plan, and wide tree-lined avenues meander past white-painted wooden 19th century houses perched on stilts. A fire in 1945 destroyed many of Georgetown’s municipal buildings, but a few stunning 19th century buildings encircle High St. and Avenue of the Republic.
