Located on the eastern bank of the mouth of the Demerara River, Georgetown is the capital of Guyana and the country’s commercial hub. The city is neatly organized along a grid plan, and wide tree-lined avenues meander past white-painted wooden 19^th century houses perched on stilts. A fire in 1945 destroyed many of Georgetown’s municipal buildings, but a few stunning 19^th century buildings encircle High St. and Avenue of the Republic. If you have some time in the city, head to St. George's Anglican Cathedral; at 44 meters in height it is reputed to be the world’s tallest wood building. History buffs should hit the National Museum, Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology, and Castellani House, residence of the National Art Collection. Flora and fauna fans can head to the botanical Gardens, Promenade Gardens, or zoo. Nearby the Botanic Gardens and National Sports Center is the Cultural Centre, which boasts a large air-conditioned theatre where performances are often staged. An even easier way to enjoy the city is to take a stroll through its streets, savoring its sites and sounds and enjoying the breezy tropical air.

From the airport take minibus No 42 to Georgetown (US $.75, 1-2 hours).
