Colonia is best appreciated from November through March, during the warm months of Uruguayan summer. Colonia is a beach town too, although that’s not where its fame lies. The city comes to life during the third week of January, when it celebrates its founding. People come to Colonia to relax in the sun at a café on any one of its quiet and tranquil streets. Uruguayan winters are often cold and gray. You could still visit some of Colonia’s museums during the cold season but you’d be missing out on much of the fun, such as riding mopeds around the Plaza de Toros.
