“The Tavern of Lanterns” or Pulpería de los Faroles is a magical place with a unique rustic ambience. Even the most recent name of this 300 year-old building is steeped in history. Pulperías in Río de la Plata originally referred to rural general stores. Gaucho culture transformed these outposts for basic necessities into centers of social life—today a pulpería refers to a tavern or restaurant where criolla or gaucho dishes are served. Legend has it that the elixir of life was discovered in a “magic” laboratory housed on the premises around the same time that the Portuguese arrived in the 1680s. Today the kitchen cooks up Mediterranean dishes and desserts, instead of magic potions, but diners don’t seem too disappointed. On Saturdays the restaurant livens things up with a dinner show. On the Plaza Mayor. Daily, 12p.m. to 3:30 p.m., 7:30-midnight.
