A traditional Uruguayan restaurant through and through, Viejo Barrio is a great introduction to cooking and culture on this side of El Río de la Plata. Many of the menu items will be familiar to those skipping over from Argentina—milanesas, lomos, and pastas. A Uruguayan chivito, however, is different from its Argentinean counterpart—here it’s a steak and egg sandwich served with fries. For the less meaty of heart, there are also six different seafood options to choose from. All the usual dessert suspects such as flan, fruit salad, apple tart and frutas en almíbar (similar to fruit cocktail) are available here too. For a taste of cocktails a la uruguaya, order the clericó, which is best described as a white sangria punch. Wine can also be ordered here by the jug, or jarra, and is surprisingly cheap. When the weather is nice the restaurant also sets up tables outside on the plaza. Credit cards accepted. A ten peso charge is added to every bill to cover the cost of cubiertos.
