With its best waves hitting in the autumn and winter, when the water is also less populated with newbies, the excellent surf could be why you find yourself heading to Punta del Diablo out of season. Even during the summer peak, however, the beaches provide a great opportunity for beginners and experienced surfers alike. Between November and March, private one-hour classes can be organized at La Surfera, a small hut on Playa del Rivero, whose qualified staff teach all abilities and ages (1 class $25, 4 classes over 4 days $75). You could also arrange with one of the many private instructors; try Pablo Ponce de León (Tel: 099-111-931), Diego Talamás (Tel: 2619-1679/099-927-909), Marcelo Brugnoli (Tel:2622-1482/099-927-045), or ask wherever you’re staying for recommendations. Alternatively, if you think you know what you’re doing, equipment can be rented from La Surfera (boards $7.50 per hour, wetsuits $5 per hour), or try Tropico on Avenida de los Pescadores, which also rents longboards, bodyboards and sandboards.
