Metropolitan Cathedral - Activity Info. Montevideo - Uruguay

Metropolitan Cathedral deserves a spot on any Montevideo must-see list. Known by many names, including Iglesia Matriz (Mother Church), this beautiful colonial structure is the main Catholic church in Montevideo, begun in the 18th century and constructed across various time periods. It’s humble in its ornateness yet still awe-inspiring, with towering white stone columns creshendoing at the altar of royal purple walls and a deep crimson carpet. Some claims to fame include the antique baptismal basin of national hero José Gervasio Antigas and the resting places of key Uruguayan figures, including two of the country’s presidents and its first archbishop.
