Showing an impressive array of plays, ballet, opera and concerts, Teatro Solis remains one of Uruguay’s most important cultural centers. This magnificent theater was built in 1857, but underwent extensive renovation in 2004. Check out a show here if you can, but it’s worth visiting for the stunning architecture alone. Be sure to leave yourself time for a tour, because it’s the only way for visitors to check out the beautiful gilded dome interior. Tours in English and other languages are $1, but on Saturday, Spanish speakers can tour for free.
