Although lacking the colonial beauty of Ciudad Vieja, central Montevideo has lots of classical architecture, including the famous Palacio Salvo. The busy shopping street of Avenida 18 de Julio is interspersed with several pleasing plazas, and museums like the notable Museo de Historia del Arte are all free. The city also hosts a remarkable number of temporary exhibitions, often promoting closer cultural relations. For the best of these, check out Sal贸n Municipal de Exposiciones (Subte), Museo de las Migraciones and Centro Municipal de Fotograf铆a.
