Sunbathe and drink mate on Montevideo's most popular beach. The brown sea water may not look inviting, but it is clean and the locals do swim here. The north-lying coast of Pocitos is built up with numerous high-rise apartments, each of which has views of the sea. A few decent seafood restaurants are housed in the bottom floors of the high-rises, and there are numerous ice cream parlors on Avenida Brasil. Rent a bike and coast down Montevideo's coastline for miles along the Rambla—you can go north to pristine Carrasco or south to the old port of Ciudad Vieja. For open-air dining on the coast, try either Che or El Viejo y El Mar.
