Fourteen years ago, two Argentine brothers couldn’t decide on the name of their first hostel. They finally agreed on Che (a word from an indigenous Argentine language that means group) Legarto (a lizard-like animal known to wander around areas of Argentina, always changing location, and preferring to be solo). The Montevideo location is now their latest addition to the Che Legaro hostel chain. The newest addition faces La Plaza de Independencia and is located in a beautifully renovated building, formerly home to the country’s first courthouse. Che Lagarto has a bar, various common areas, and an extremely friendly staff who are interested in making your stay an enjoyable one. The hostel organizes free city tours, hands out entrance passes to the local clubs, and is constantly hosting theme nights in their bar. Asados are often cooked on the roof with a view of the Plaza de Independencia and ocean to one side and the port to the other.
