Hostel

By Amanda Massello

Located on the Plaza de la Constitución in a 19th century building typical of the neighborhood, Ciudad Vieja Hostel exudes charm. The three-floor hostel is only a stone’s throw away from nightlife and Montevideo’s more interesting historic sights. The perks of staying here: free Spanish and tango lessons are held on the premises. This backpacker spot also hosts occasional asados and Uruguayan chivito nights. Rumor has it some weekends there’s live music in the hallway piano bar. Rooms are simple and clean—exactly what you would expect from an HI-sanctioned hostel. Guests can count on around-the-clock hot water, wi-fi access, laundry service and public telephone. Sun yourself on the enormous deck by day; lounge in one of the multiple living rooms by night and escape Montevideo’s rains. Staff will organize city tours and arrange bike rentals.
