Tourist accommodation is spread throughout the city. The majority of short-term travelers stay in hostels and hotels in the Ciudad Vieja, the nucleus of Montevideo’s nightlife. Ciudad Vieja is a good bet as it is also home to most of the city’s more important museums and historic landmarks. The Mercado del Puerto and Palacio Salvo are within walking distance from any part of the neighborhood. Ciudad Vieja offers more in the way of hostels and luxury hotels; most of the good mid-range hotels are in Pocitos, which is quieter and more relaxed. However, for travelers only staying a day or two, it is probably not worth the extra travel time it takes to get from the north to the city’s main tourist attractions.
