Hostel
Red Hostel is set in a converted colonial house in the center of Montevideo, just around the corner from the Plaza Intendencia. It gets a little noisy, but most people don't come here to stay long. At one point, this was the only hostel in Montevideo. The owners decided to paint it red, hence the name. The communal kitchen, free wireless internet, and comfy couches for lounging make guests feel right at home here. Beer is sold in the hostel itself—just ask. Late night, the party carries on up on the roof. Single, double and triple rooms are available in addition to the dorms. Cash only.

The ambient is quite good, breakfast is okay, beds and dorms seem to be kept clean and tidy.
However, we had a very unpleasant experience. We have booked a private room, received e-mail confirmation for the reservation but, when we arrived, the reservation had disappeared from the hostel system. As if it never existed. They apologized and proposed us an alternate solution. We accepted and went out for a stroll. When we came back, there were other staff people on duty, and they knew nothing of our previous arrangement. Neither did they show any interest in solving the problem they had created themselves.
We moved to a hotel (Hotel Europa, simple but very comfortable) instead. It was almost the same price for three people and they were, at least, organized.
I think hostels are meant to be simple, budget options. However, organization is not a luxury item and it should be taken seriously.
