The best time to hit Montevideo is during Carnaval in March, when the city comes alive with various murga (musical theatre) performances being staged nightly. If you can’t make it for Carnaval, the late spring and early fall are great seasons to visit, when the sun is tempered by a cool breeze coming off the Río de la Plata. During the peak months of summer, Montevideo empties and its residents flock to Uruguay’s eastern shores to rent beach cabins.
