La Lupita

Location:
Luis de la Torre 565 and Gregorio Suárez, Punta Carretas
Montevideo, Uruguay

Restaurant Types:
Mexican

By Amanda Massello

La Lupita is the closest you’ll get to authentic Mexican food in Montevideo. Here, tortillas are made from scratch with corn instead of wheat. What the food lacks in genuine spiciness, the restaurant makes up for in charm and drink offerings, including several kinds of Mexican beer not available elsewhere. Tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, chilaquiles--all your favorite Mexican dishes are here. Don’t worry: there are veggie options too. Tables flow out on to the street at this small joint to accommodate the high volume of customers dropping in for yummy Mexican. Call ahead for a reservation if you don’t want to be left out in the cold. Prices range from $18 to $150. Tuesday-Saturday, 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m., Sundays, 8:30-11:30 p.m.

Atmosphere: Outdoor/patio dining
