Medical Care in Montevideo

For English speakers, Hospital Británico (Av. Italia 2420, Tel: 400-9011) offers bilingual doctors and quality medical service. You can pay for a consult out of pocket. If you’re in need of immunizations, there is a clinic at the port which gives Yellow Fever vaccinations, though they’re not necessary for entry into Uruguay. There is a public hospital where you can be seen free of charge, but if you’re on a tight schedule be aware that you may have to wait all day to be seen. The public hospital, Hospital Pereira Rossell (Tel: 598-2-707-6667), is located at Bulevar Artigas 1550 in Tres Cruces. If you go to a private clinic and get a receipt you should be able to get your traveler’s insurance to reimburse you. For minor health issues, check with the nearest pharmacist. There are many pharmacies on 18 de Julio and every mall in town also has a pharmacy of its own.
