The concrete hand in the sand on Play Brava, otherwise known as La Mano, is an important landmark in Punta del Este. Chilean artist Mario Irrarazabal endowed the city with this piece of abstract modern art during the first International Modern Outdoor Sculpture Conference, held here in 1981. Due to its popularity, Irrarazabal was later invited to install similar pieces by the cities of Madrid, Venice, and Atacama, Chile. As Punta del Este's most photographed attraction, La Mano has become a symbol of the city.
