Walking Between Cabo Polonio And Barra De Valizas

Location:
Uruguay

dunes, walk, coast

One of the most pleasant activities to enjoy as part of your stay in Cabo Polonio is a walk to the next town of Barra de Valizas. The eight-kilometer (5 mi) hike starts with a westward turn along Playa Calavera (away from the lighthouse) and a stroll along the beautiful stretch of coastline, which you’ll share with the sea lions. When you reach the row of three tall sand dunes, head onto them for spectacular 360⁰ views. Keep going, with the forest on your left, until you reach a small river. Here, you can hire a fishing boat to take you across, or else it is a difficult wade. After that, head over the small rocky mountain, then you’ll see the town below you and you can go straight down.

You should allow at least 2-2.5 hours for each direction. The nicest time of day to return is just before sunset; sit on the dunes to watch, preferably with a bottle of wine. If you prefer only to walk one way then you can take a bus back from Barra de Valizas to the national park entrance (be sure to return before closure at 9 p.m.). Although most of the walk is on sand, you should wear light shoes (at least flip-flops) due to the rocky parts.

A flatter but longer alternative route is to keep to the 12-kilometer (7.5 mi) coast. This is a popular option with joggers.
