Uruguay Hotels

Uruguay is full of adequate accommodation options, no matter what type of budget you may have. Whether it is a luxury resort in Punta del Este, a budget hotel in Colonia de Sacramento or a cabaña on the coast, you are bound to sleep sound in Uruguay. Accommodations are more plentiful in main tourist destinations like Montevideo, Colonia de Sacramento and Punta del Este, but some of the more unique accommodation experiences can be found in the smaller, off-the-beaten track towns and villages.

Uruguay Budget Hotels and Uruguay Hostels

Many of the hostels in Uruguay are nicer than you may expect, and include breakfast, free Internet and even laundry services. An additional perk is that many of the hostels along the coast are beachside or within close walking distance to the beach, so you can feel as if you are at a resort without dishing out the extra cash. Since a lot of travel to Uruguay is seasonal, most accommodation prices depend on what month of the year it is. Prices tend to be around, or slightly more expensive, than hostels in Buenos Aires. Dorm beds usually go for about $12-18, while privates typically cost $17-30. However, during the high season, expect to tag on an additional $5-10 to average off-season prices. Also, these hostels tend to fill up far in advance during high season, so make sure to research and make reservations ahead of time. If hostels are not your style, but you are still on a budget, then you will be able to find some nice budget hotel options in Colonia de Sacramento and Montevideo. Usually you can secure a comfy single, double or triple room with private bathrooms for around $20-45.

Uruguay Luxury Hotels and Uruguay Resorts

Most of Uruguay's luxury hotels and resorts are concentrated in Montevideo and in Punta del Este. To match the higher-class clientele that go to these spots in Uruguay, luxury hotels and resorts have popped up readily in these places and tend to have pools, private beach access (in Punta del Este), spas and sometimes, casinos. Expect to pay about $150-300 a night for a room in one of these luxury hotels. You can find chain hotels like the Radisson and the Sheraton in Montevideo as well. In Carmelo, there is even a top-rated Four Seasons hotel that has a spa, a fitness center, an outdoor pool and on-site fine dining, among other amenities.

Uruguay Camping and Other Uruguay Accommodation Options

A popular alternative to staying at a Uruguay hostel or budget hotel is camping. Budget travelers will find that dorm room prices are a bit higher in Uruguay than in many other destinations on the gringo trail. Therefore, those looking to stretch their savings, will find camping to be an economical, and many times, a more adventurous and fun way, to experience Uruguay. Camping is especially popular in the summer months, when thousands of people flock to the coast. Many of the beach towns, such as Punta del Diablo, allow visitors to camp out in certain areas for a small fee, such as $5 a day. In fact, it is fairly common for beach bums and summertime employees from Uruguayan cities—along with other Argentine, Brazilian and foreign tourists—to camp out on the coast for weeks, or even months, at a time. It is also possible to hike from one tiny Uruguayan beach town to the next, so some travelers choose to hike and camp their way along the coast. Therefore, in Uruguay, camping can enhance your travel experience, while saving you money as well.

Those travelers looking to spend a week or more in a beach town on the Uruguayan coast should consider renting a cabaña. In high season, many landlords will only rent out cabañas by the month or for the entire summer, but if you ask around town a bit, you should be able to find a place to rent by the week. Especially if you are in a couple or group, staying in a cabaña ends up being less costly since you won't be dishing out $18 or more on a bed per night, and you will get more privacy, your own kitchen, and many times, beautiful ocean views.
