Border crossings by Bus
There are three crossings between Argentina and Uruguay: Gualeguaychú to Fray Bentos, Colón to Paysandú and Concordia to Salto. Each crosses the Río de la Plata via a bridge—there are no land crossings to Uruguay. When crossing from Buenos Aires to Montevideo, buses take the General San Martín bridge, which connects Gualeguaychú to Fray Bentos.
Ferry Options
Buquebus (www.buquebus.com) has offices both in Argentina and in Uruguay. See the website for more details. Uruguayan-owned Ferryturismo (www.ferryturismo.com.uy) also operates ferries between Buenos Aires and Colonia. Cacciola Viajes y Turismo also runs a service between El Tigre, outside of Buenos Aires, and Carmelo, which is (3 to 3.5 hours) west of Montevideo by bus. The Tigre to Carmelo option is the cheapest but is far lengthier and involves several bus-boat combinations.
By Air
Pluna (4329-9211, www.pluna.com.uy) and Aerolíneas Argentinas (0810-222-86527, www.aerolineasargentina.com) run short-haul flights to both Montevideo and Punta del Este, leaving from Aeroparque Jorge Newberry in Buenos Aires.
